IMPORTANCE OF GURUPURNIMA

GURU PURNIMA, IS A SPIRITUAL TRADITION IN HINDU CULTURE DEDICATED TO SPIRITUAL AND ACADEMIC TEACHERS, WHO ARE EVOLVED OR ENLIGHTENED HUMANS, READY TO SHARE THEIR WISDOM, WITH VERY LITTLE OR NO MONETARY EXPECTATION.

THIS FESTIVAL IS TRADITIONALLY OBSERVED BY HINDUS, BUDDHISTS AND JAINS TO REVERE THEIR CHOSEN SPIRITUAL TEACHERS / LEADERS AND EXPRESS THEIR GRATITUDE. THE FESTIVAL IS CELEBRATED ON THE FULL MOON DAY (PURNIMA) IN THE HINDU MONTH OF ASHADHA (JUNE–JULY) AS IT IS KNOWN IN THE HINDU CALENDAR OF INDIA. GURU PURNIMA IS ALSO KNOWN AS VYASA PURNIMA, AS IT IS BELIEVED THAT ON THIS DAY VED VYASA — THE AUTHOR OF MAHABHARATA WAS BORN, WHO IS A PIONEER OF THE GURU-SHISHYA TRADITION.

IMPORTANCE:

GURU PURNIMA IS A SYMBOL OF THE GURU-SHISHYA TRADITION. HINDU ASCETICS AND WANDERING MONKS (SANYASIS), OBSERVE THIS DAY BY OFFERING PUJA TO THEIR GURU. STUDENTS OF INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC AND INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE, WHICH ALSO FOLLOW THE GURU SHISHYA PARAMPARA, CELEBRATE THIS HOLY FESTIVAL AROUND THE WORLD. ON THIS DAY, DISCIPLES OFFER PUJA TO THEIR GURUS AND SEEK THEIR BLESSINGS. IN INDIA, THE DAY IS CELEBRATED BY THANKING TEACHERS AND SEEKING BLESSINGS FROM THEM AND ALSO BY REMEMBERING TEACHERS AND SCHOLARS FROM HISTORY.

THE PLACE OF GURU IS VERY HIGH IN THE INDIAN CULTURE AND MYTHOLOGY. AND, THEY ARE FILLED WITH THE FAMOUS LEGENDS WHEREIN THE PUPILS HAVE GONE TO LENGTHS TO PLEASE OR APPEASE THEIR MENTORS. WE ARE ALSO AWARE OF SANDIPANI RUSHI, EKLAVY, BAIJU BAWRA AND MANY OTHER STORIES RELATED TO GURU SHISHYA.

GURU POORNIMA IS BASICALLY THE FESTIVALS OF THE ‘SEEKERS’ – THE SEEKERS OF THE DIVINE WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE, SPIRITUALITY, PEACE AND GREATER PRUDENCE.

GURU POORNIMA CAN ALSO BE CALLED AS THE ‘TEACHER’S DAY’, AS PER THE INDIAN SPIRITUAL PRACTICES AND CULTURE. SANT KABIR HAS RIGHTLY STATED THAT –

GURU KE SUMIRAN MAATR SE, NASHT VIGHN ANANT
TAASE SARV AARAMBH ME(I), DHYAAVAT HAI SAB SANT

(JUST BY REMEMBERING YOUR GURU, YOU WILL BE ABLE TO OVERCOME ALL THE OBSTACLES. THAT’S WHY AT THE BEGINNING OF EVERYTHING, GURU IS REMEMBERED – NOT ONLY BY THE SAINTS, BUT ALSO BY MANY COMMON PEOPLE)

INDIAN ACADEMICS CELEBRATE THIS DAY BY THANKING THEIR TEACHERS. MANY SCHOOLS, COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES HAVE EVENTS IN WHICH STUDENTS THANK THEIR TEACHERS AND REMEMBER PAST SCHOLARS.  STUDENTS ARRANGE DIFFERENT ART-COMPETITIONS ACCORDINGLY. THE MAIN TRADITION AMONG GURU-SHISHYA IS BLESSINGS (I.E. STUDENT GREET HIS/HER GURU BY RECITING POETRY OR QUOTE AND THE GURU GIVES BLESSINGS FOR SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS OF AN INDIVIDUAL. IN SHORT, GURU PURNIMA IS A TRADITIONAL WAY OF INDIANS CELEBRATING TEACHER’S DAY.
